Pinatas are a traditional Mexican party game which means it's a lot of fun but just a bit dangerous in the wrong hands, like a bunch of firecrackers.
Very close adult supervision is always required when using them as they must be split with a stick to release the sweets and treats you put inside.
The object of the game is to whack the piñata with a stick while it is suspended above you, sometimes being raised and lowered on a rope. The child must be blindfolded and given a couple of goes before quietly handing the stick onto the next player.
Naturally the kids always strike with all their might so keeping the onlookers back is absolutely essential in order to prevent them becoming human pinatas with the consequence that your child is never invited to another party again.
It makes a great finale to a party. As the parents arrive to pick up they get the benefit of watching their gentle lambs beating a poor little donkey, mermaid or clown into smithereens with a stick. It never fails to amuse.
